What are your fondest memories of 2009? What were the low points? All told, what were the most significant events of 2009? Do you wish you could do it all over again?

View 281 Answers

Lots of cool people died. Some shitty people died too. We got a new President. My best friend's mom died. I am getting a doggie this week or the next. I inked a good business deal.

2009 is fired. It didn't fill out those TSA reports.

A greeble or nurnie is a small piece of detailing added to break up the surface of an object to add visual interest to a surface or object, particularly in movie special effects. They serve no real purpose other than to add complexity to the object, and cause the flow of the eye over the surface of the object to be interrupted, usually giving the impression of increased size. It is essentially the small detailed technical part of a larger object. The detail can be made from geometric primitives, including cylinders, cubes, and rectangles, combined to create intricate, but meaningless, surface detail. Greebles are commonly found on models or drawings of fictional spacecraft in science fiction.

Dear oil people:

We called you two weeks ago saying our furnace needed servicing and invoked our contract to get it looked at. You blithely said the first possible chance they could get out to our house was going to be at the end of January. Buh? We told you it was making rude noises at us and doing random kaboomy things. Tee hee, end of January.

We were planning on going out to see Avatar and Sherlock Holmes tonight in a big fat double feature of awesome. Instead the furnace died.

Now your guy has to schlep out here in the dead of night. Tee hee.

I ain't paying extra. YOU WERE WARNED.

ETA: Oh FML, the house reeks of diesel now. :P

Current Mood: getting there

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.

* January - Wolf moon only
* February - Ice moon
* March - Storm moon
* April - Growing moon
* May - Hare moon
* June - Mead moon
* July - Hay moon
* August - Corn moon
* September - Harvest moon
* October - Hunter's moon
* November - Snow moon
* December - Winter moon

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

It is time for the 3rd Time Limited Print Sale!!!
(the first was back in 07' for 'Mizuame'.)
(and the second one in 08' for 'Two Sisters'.)

This is a type of sale where the print will be available for exactly one hour,
and ANYONE who clicks the button during that time will be guaranteed a print.
(the edition size will be much larger than usual of course.)

The sale will most likely happen in mid-January.

i cant seem to post the POLL on to this entry.
so please see the newest entry to vote in the poll.

unfortunately if you do not have a Live Journal account, it doesn't let you click,
but feel free to leave a comment and will count those in.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Who wants me to get the 2010 version of this calendar? :D

Poo nugget for this weekend: The Ritual Poo - The Ritual Poo occurs at the same time each day. Due to the clockwork nature of this poo, you can prepare by having a newspaper ready and your favorite bathroom location scoped out ahead of time. The regularity of these poos may provide comfort in an otherwise unpredictable world. Synonyms: Rite of Passage, Palm Poo, Calendar Crap.

Poo nugget for Monday, December 21: Johnny and the John - The Great Toilet Paper Scare was triggered on December 19, 1973. Late-night comedian Johnny Carson joked about an impending toilet paper shortage in the United States. This announcement in front of millions of television viewers caused massive hoarding of toilet paper, depleting supermarket inventory for a period of three and a half weeks.

Poo nugget for Tuesday, December 22: Doo You Know? - Doo-Doos and Don'ts of Hiking Etiquette - The incredible popularity of hiking and climbing has made waste disposal a big topic for outdoor recreationists and organizations. In 1990, Hikers Against Doo-Doo was founded. It is an international organization dedicated to keeping human and animal excrement off mountain paths around the world. The group claimed a thousand members as of 1994, and attracted nineteen people to its 1993 International Congress in Moscow.

Poo nugget for Wednesday, December 23: Bidet Backpack - Looking for the soothing comfort and thorough cleanup of a bidet while you're on the go? The Phess traveling bidet system includes a spray wand and container with manual pump that allows you to perform your post-number-two cleanup virtually anywhere. Touted as hygienic and environmentally friendly, this "misty mate" adds moistness to the cleanup process and reduces toilet paper use.

Poo nugget for Thursday, December 24: Dr. Stool Says - Rapunzel Syndrome - This rare condition occurs when patients who compulsively eat hair form a trichobezoar, an indigestible bolus of hair particles in the stomach and small intestine. Patients can develop abdominal pain and vomiting if this hair ball causes intestinal obstruction. As humans lack the ability to digest these particles, surgery is the only treatment option.

Poo nugget for Friday, December 25: Gift Poo - Surprise! - A Gift Poo is a dump that someone left behind in a toilet without flushing. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are most prevalent in public restrooms and fraternity houses. These gifts are sometimes left as trophies to anonymously show off accomplishments, sometimes as pranks, or occasionally as absentminded accidents - often resulting from multitaskers trying to talk on the cell phone, and wanting to avoid the flush that gives them away. The origins of these poos may remain a mystery, but they can linger anywhere from minutes to days, depending on when the gift is first seen or smelled.

SPAGHETTI!

J. is bringing home spaghetti from the good italian place. I loves him. I didn't feel like cooking tonight so this is awesome.

My eyes are all bleary and snowblind. Snow changes colors so much--when it first falls its more spectral and blue, then it settles into this flatness. Very difficult to paint to my satisfaction. So I've been staring out the windows for the past three days, mucking about with watercolors.

I am patiently awaiting our doggie.

World making, как говорится, full-scale.

  • The human genome is about 3.4 billion nucleotides long. (source)

  • Each nucleotide can be 1 of 4 chemicals (A, T, C, or G), and takes 2 bits to encode each nucleotide.

  • One sperm holds half of a copy of the human genome.

  • Thus one human sperm contains 3.4 billion bits (3.4x109 nucleotides * 0.5 genomes * 2 bits) of information.

  • 3 billion bits is 405.3 MiB. (source)

  • Normal sperm count in one ejaculation is about 40 million. (source)

  • That converts to about 16.2 PiB, or 16,212 TiB, or 16,212,000 GiB, in one ejaculation. (source)

  • For comparison, a standard CD holds 670 MiB, and a one-layer one-sided DVD holds 4.4 GiB.

    According to the Oxford English Dictionary, hello is an alteration of hallo, hollo, which came from Old High German "halâ, holâ, emphatic imper[ative] of halôn, holôn to fetch, used esp[ecially] in hailing a ferryman." It also connects the development of hello to the influence of an earlier form, holla, whose origin is in the French holà (roughly, 'whoa there!', from French là 'there'). -- Wikipedia

    Why do so many people on Flicker find HDR photography "interesting". It is emphatically not. It's not dynamic either, just flat and monotonous. I doubt I could find a cheesier visual effect even if I had a complete archive of images posted to Geocities from 1997.

    I'm craving lasagne but I don't wanna build one.

    These fake Ugg boots I bought are almost as comfortable as the real thing but I can tell after a month of wear that they aren't going to last like real Uggs. Bah, for 35 bucks I can deal with cheap seaming.

    Poo nugget for this weekend: Rectal High - Enemas are used in contemporary medicine to cleanse the colon or as a mode of delivering drugs into the system. Traditional medicine has long employed enemas for the latter reason, and some Native American and Mayan tribes continue to administer peyote and other hallucinogenic drugs in this manner.

    Poo nugget for Monday, December 14: Dr. Stool Says - Constipation - More than just hard stool, constipation is defined by any one of the following: infrequent bowel movements (less than three a week), difficulty during defecation (straining during more than 25 percent of bowel movements or a subjective sensation of hard stools), and sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation.

    Poo nugget for Tuesday, December 15: The Working Title Was Taming of the Stool - The first appearance of the word diaper was in Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew: "Another bear the ewer, the third a diaper."

    Poo nugget for Wednesday, December 16: Doo You Know? - How Many Toilets Do You Think There Are In The United States? - According to the EPA, there are an estimated 222 million residential toilets in the U.S., with ten million new toilets sold each year. The annual flush total? Three billion gallons.

    Poo nugget for Thursday, December 17: Mr. Hanky, the Christmas Poo - On this date in 1997, Mr. Hanky, the Christmas Poo, first appeared on the television show South Park. He emerged from the toilet bowl in the tenth episode of South Park's first season, wearing a Santa hat and bearing gifts for little girls and boys whose diets are high in fiber.

    Poo nugget for Friday, December 18: You're Avoiding Poo For Two - Pregnant women should refrain from cleaning cat litter, as it could expose the fetus to toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can cause complications or even miscarriage. To further reduce the risk, the litter should be cleaned daily - by someone else. Daddy, get to work.
